Rationale for tiered pricing

AIP introduced tiered pricing in 2004, in an effort to establish fairer prices for online access for institutions of different size and research intensity. Our plan was developed in consultation with librarians representing a number of large institutions.

Publications affected by tiered pricing

  • AIP Conference Proceedings
  • Applied Physics Letters
  • Biomicrofluidics
  • Chaos
  • Journal of Applied Physics
  • The Journal of Chemical Physics
  • Journal of Laser Applications
  • Journal of Mathematical Physics
  • Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data
  • Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy
  • Low Temperature Physics
  • Physics of Fluids
  • Physics of Plasmas
  • Physics Today
  • Review of Scientific Instruments

The following package subscriptions which include these titles also have tiered prices.

  • AIP Select (formerly AIP Archival)
  • AIP Complete (formerly AIP Archival Plus)
  • Physics of Fluids / Physics of Plasmas

Computation of AIP tiers

Tier assignments are derived from an activity index that is computed using downloads of articles, past subscription history, and authorship. The tiers are as consistent as possible with the Carnegie classification scheme for North American universities; however all institutions worldwide are assigned tiers by the same measure.
