Complete Your Collection of AIP Online Content with the New AIP Digital Archive Supplement
Three years ago we introduced the AIP Digital Archive, which provides perpetual rights, for a one-time payment, to the complete historic archive of eight of AIP's high-impact journals. Now, to complement this product, we've created the AIP Digital Archive Supplement, which offers perpetual rights to the complete online archives of:
- AIP Conference Proceedings (1970 – 2004)
- Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data (1972 – 1998)
- Low Temperature Physics (1997 – 1998)
Purchase is again at a one-time cost and will add more than 53,000 additional articles to your online collection. Prices for the AIP Digital Archive Supplement are tiered. As with the AIP Digital Archive, you have two options for accessing the AIP Digital Archive Supplement. You can choose long-term access via AIP's Scitation hosting platform, which allows users to link to a wide range of related content and valuable features, or you can choose a local hosting option for your institution's own network.

TWO AIP JOURNAL AUTHORS AWARDED 2010 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS
AIP congratulates Profs. Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov of the University of Manchester, U.K. on winning the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering work with graphene, a single-atom-thick sheet of carbon. The official announcement was made on October 5 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
Prof. Geim has been a prominent contributor to AIP's journal Applied Physics Letters since 1992, and to Journal of Applied Physics since 2000. His work has also appeared in AIP's flagship magazine Physics Today. Prof. Novoselov has been an active contributor to both these prestigious journals since 2003. Four articles co-authored by Profs. Geim and Novoselov have been published in APL since 2007, all of which delve deeply into the properties of graphene and directly impact its fabrication and utilization in new devices, as well as its use in precision metrology.
Graphene was first created from graphite‒a carbon-based material most commonly found in pencils‒by Geim and his colleagues when they pulled a piece of adhesive tape across the bulk material. Eventually, they were pulling away a single-atom thick layer of carbon-graphene.
Graphene's honeycomb crystal lattice gives the material especially unique electrical properties. Electrons move through graphene nearly unimpeded when compared to other materials. This allows for the creation of ultrafast electronic elements. This property is thought to be a result of graphene's near-perfect atomic structure.
The rapid rise of graphene since Profs. Geim and Novoselov's initial work has been fascinating to follow in the literature, and the full impact of their discovery will no doubt be seen as the unique properties of graphene are utilized to their full potential. AIP is especially thankful to Profs. Geim and Novoselov, because it's the content they and other highly regarded physicists provide that keep APL and JAP as the two most highly cited journals in their field.
Every journal and magazine article that AIP has published by these Nobel Laureates is currently accessible free of charge.

AIP IS THE NEW PUBLISHER OF JOURNAL OF LASER APPLICATIONS
AIP is pleased to let you know that we've recently signed a strategic partnership agreement with the Laser Institute of America (LIA) to publish its flagship publication, Journal of Laser Applications® (JLA). After a dozen years as a publishing partner LIA felt, given AIP's excellent track record, that it was time to take our partnership to the next level. It was clear to them that our upgrades to staff, the recent enhancements we made to our Scitation platform, and the strong global presence we can offer JLA would greatly benefit their subscribers.
In case you're not aware, we'd also like to let you know that JLA will move to tiered pricing in 2011. In addition, JLA will no longer be available in print 2011. All paid subscriptions will be converted to online-only subscriptions.
If the research your patrons conduct touches at all upon the subjects below, you may want to consider acquiring this extremely authoritative and affordable publication for your collection. The Journal of Laser Applications serves as the major international forum for exchanging ideas and information in disciplines that apply laser technology, delivering comprehensive coverage in areas that include:

ACCESS THE AIP 2011 JOURNAL CATALOG ONLINE
The 2011 Journal Catalog for AIP, its Member Societies, and Publishing Partners was recently distributed to librarians and institutional customers. The catalog contains journal descriptions, subscription prices, and details on how to subscribe. New this year is a digital edition, which provides an interactive experience similar to paging through a printed copy and includes live links to journal and publisher websites. The great functionality of the new online catalog has made it so user-friendly that we are now able to direct institutional customers outside the United States to the digital edition; print copies were mailed to US-based institutions and to our international customers upon request.

A View from Within: Melissa Conchieri
You may have recently been contacted by Melissa Conchieri, AIP's new telemarketing and customer relations representative. Melissa has taken on this newly created role at AIP after working for more than two years in our customer service department. In this position, Melissa developed an extensive knowledge of AIP's products, subscription models, and online licensing policies. Prior to joining AIP in January 2008, Melissa had worked for a contracted company dedicated to providing customer services for state-run programs. We wanted to formally introduce Melissa as AIP strives to strengthen its one-on-one contact with librarians.
Why is there a need for the newly created position of telemarketing and customer relations representative at AIP?
It is an especially exciting time to be working at AIP right now. For example, just a few weeks ago we introduced the AIP Digital Archive Supplement, which provides ownership of backfile content to AIP Conference Proceedings, The Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, and Low Temperature Physics. This content had not been digitized at the time we began offering the AIP Digital Archive, which was created in response to librarians' requests for a product that offered access to the archives of eight AIP journals for a one-time payment.
My role is to reach out to librarians and introduce products such as these. We realize that librarians are very busy and don't necessarily have time to seek out the latest subscription and purchase options, especially those that may make better sense for their institution and long-term acquisition goals. My job is to educate librarians so they can quickly understand their options, thus taking some of the burden off them.
Have there been any surprises during your first four months in this position?
I have found it surprising that many librarians are willing to take a significant amount of time to speak with me and share their feedback on our journals. We've also talked about the challenges they face when deciding how their budget is spent, and where the future of library acquisitions is headed. I've certainly learned a lot in these past few months regarding the complexity of library acquisitions and the time that goes into making these decisions every year. I feel very fortunate that the main part of my job is to interact and build relationships with a genuinely friendly group of professionals.
What have you learned from your transition to AIP's marketing group?
I've certainly learned that AIP is taking a very proactive approach in keeping up with the changing climate of STM publishing. It's invigorating to be surrounded by colleagues who are excited about looking ahead and who encourage me to express my ideas. Historically, AIP has been on the leading edge of content delivery in the STM community, but I think we are really pushing the envelope with such new advances as iResearch, our iPhone and iPod touch app; the recent "C³" enhancements to AIP's Scitation online hosting platform; and UniPHY, AIP's literature-based social networking site for physical scientists. There will be plenty more to come, and I can't wait to help keep our customers informed.
What do you look forward to most in your new position?
I am very excited to talk with our customers every day, and I look forward to meeting some of them in person at future conferences. By reaching out to our customers, I hope to achieve an open line of communication to ensure that their needs are being met. With an approachable attitude and open ear, I aim to convey the fact that AIP is proactively expanding existing relationships with customers and at the same time, developing new ones.
